Reading Fluency

Reading fluency is: the ability to accurately decode words, read words at an adequate rate, and read words aloud using meaningful intonation and expression.  Fluency is considered the “link” between recognizing words and the ability to understand what is being read.

A student may be struggling in this area if he/she: 

  • Is identified to be below grade level on words-correct-per-minute assessments
  • Has difficulty decoding words compared to peers
  • Is able to decode words correctly but reads aloud in a slow, labored fashion
  • Appears to become frustrated due to speed or accuracy when reading aloud
  • Does not read aloud using expression
  • Does not pause at meaningful breaks within sentences or paragraphs
